Jobar (also spelled Jawbar or Joubar) is a neighborhood on the northeastern outskirts of Damascus, historically known as a village outside the old city walls.  Over many centuries, Jobar was notable for its ancient Jewish community and the Eliyahu Hanavi (Jobar) Synagogue, which was a site of pilgrimage and believed to be built over a cave connected with the prophet Elijah.
